Dark crimson with a big cassis and spice nose. Full bodied with silky tannins and rich, indulgent flavours of overripe berries, cocoa, fig and sultana. Interesting garrigue flashes too. Very complex and generous, with huge length too.

Drink with duck in honey and sweet spice, good-quality chocolate, chocolate-based desserts, or just on its own after dinner. Best if decanted an hour before use.

Mary Dowey, Irish wine writer - "The most chocolate-friendly wine in Ireland ... Very smooth and delightfully fruity - creamy blackberries and elderberries, with a slightly raisined finish ... Just perfect with chocolate desserts."

Maury is an appellation in the Pyrenees foothills specialising in vins doux naturels (fortified, sweet wine), produced mostly from the various Grenaches grapes - Noir, Blanc and Gris. The area also also makes quirky dry reds and whites under the Cotes de Roussillon (Villages) appellations or the IGP Cotes Catalanes title.

This wine is made by a process known as mutage: fermentation is arrested part way through by the addition of grape spirit, when much of the grape sugars remain unfermented. The result is high-alcohol, sweet wine.

Mas Amiel Vintage was aged for a year in tank prior to bottling, under low-oxygen conditions.
