Goedverwacht Great Expectations Merlot, Robertson Valley 2015

Quick Overview

This medium-bodied wine avoids the clichéd jammy style of some New World Merlots, offering instead ripe plum fruit with an emphasis on darker secondary notes of coffee, chocolate, herbs and even a whiff of tar.

Get a flavour of the Western Cape with this serious quaffer from Jan du Toit's Goedverwacht estate.

Seven months' contact with French oak gives the ripe plum and cherry fruit time to develop its inviting nose of dried fruit, sage and coffee, and a fresh, mid-weight palate of fruit cake and cherry acidity underpinned by an emphatic darker character of black olive, chocolate and coffee.
This depth makes the Great Expectations Merlot a very versatile food wine, suited to simple tomato pasta dishes just as much as the bigger flavours of roasts and strong cheeses. Jan du Toit and the Goedverwacht estate

Robertson is a warm, dry district in the Breede River Valley region of South Africa that produces 15% of the country's wine each year. With rainfall of just 400mm, irrigation is essential.

The grapes for the Great Expectations Merlot were selected in the vineyard, then harvested in the relative coolness of the period between 3am and 11am to preserve their freshness.

Cool night temperatures during the ripening period helped to promote good colour in the grape skins and eventually in the bright ruby red of the wine.

The 180 hectare estate is owned jointly by Jan du Toit and his son Gawie.
