Classes In January 2008, there will be ten week terms running in the city centre from Wednesday 16th January and Douglas from Thursday 17th January. On Wednesdays, there will be both Beginners, designed for those who have never held hands and danced in the name of swing, and Improvers, which will suit those who have completed the Beginners course. In Douglas, there will be a Beginners course. The beginners course will introduce you to the basics of Lindy Hop (another name for Swing dancing), giving you the confidence to take to the floor. You’ll learn key moves, grooves and style. The classes are relaxed and informal. You don’t need to have any dance experience, and you don’t need to come with a partner. The Improvers course aims to consolidate what you have previously learnt, and to further extend your repertoire and understanding of swing moves, style and attitude. By the end, you’ll be turning a few heads on the dance floor! It is essential to pre-book for all courses - please, don’t just turn up on the first night, as you may be disappointed….. Wednesday Classes at the Firkin Crane Beginners class is from 7.30pm to 8.45pm and runs for ten weeks, from Wednesday 16th January until Wednesday 19th March. The Improvers class will be from 9.00pm to 10.15pm. The classes will be taught by Elaine and Jessica. To join the classes, you must book in advance. For more information or to book your place, please contact Elaine c/o dublindy.com. The ten week course costs €100, which is payable in advance. Thursday Classes at Garryduff Sports Centre, Douglas A ten week beginners course runs from Thursday 17th January to Thursday 20th March. The class is from 7.45pm until 8.45pm . GALWAY JAZZ WORKSHOP and JAZZ JAM – 26th January On 26th January there is a “Jazz steps” workshop in Galway, being taught by Avril Ni Chonaire. She’s a diva when it comes to Jazz routines, and on the 26 th January she will be sharing her ideas about how to lay down those jazz steps (Susie Q, Apple Jacks, Fall off the log etc) and teaching a complete routine - the Trunky Do. The workshop will start at one pm and run through (with breaks) til around five pm. In the evening there will be a Jazz Jam in a pub – a chance to practice the Trunky Do, listen to some lovely swing music and meet some of the Galway and Dublin swing dancers. The workshop will be held in the Rowing Club, Woodquay (by the water behind the Town Hall Theatre), and after the workshop there’s hopefully the option of a meal out at Milano’s pizza. The cost of the workshop is €35. The venue and the entry price for the Jazz Jam are yet to be confirmed! You don’t have to have learnt any jazz steps before, but if you have you will find the day easier. If you haven’t learnt jazz steps before, the day will be challenging, but Avril is a lovely teacher, who will make you feel at ease. To reserve your place, contact Avril c/o dublindy.com
